Thursday, July 25th (Day 332)
We left Florida on early Tuesday morning, in the pouring rain. It rained all the way through Florida and Alabama....heavy, pounding, thunder and lightning rain.
When we stopped for the first night in Alabama, it was still raining! We stayed at The Woods RV Park outside Montgomery, where we stopped last year. We woke early the next morning and took off. Florida is a very flat state, and Alabama isn't much different....just a few more trees along the highways. Since we had a long ways to go, and the weather was so crummy, we just went on I- 65 and drove and drove and drove...
Wednesday
When we got to Tennessee, the landscape started to change just a little, although the rain continued.
We drove right through Tennessee, and into Kentucky, where we decided to make a stop. The weather finally turned...beautiful...warm, not hot, not humid..we'd almost forgot what that's like!
Cave City was just nine miles away from Mammoth National Park. So Harris decided to both get his Geezer pass and take a tour that he hadn't taken before (and to pay the Geezer half price rate!) The tour is called the "New Entrance" tour even though it was discovered 50+ years ago. The tour starts at a sink hole.
The original stairs were wooden, but they didn't last long. The 3rd company that completed the stairs after the first two went bankrupt was the same that made stairs for the navy. Each step cost $3000 in 1980 and after going down 287 of them Harris thought that the US government got a great deal. They were made of stainless heavy gauge and look brand new today.
The caves weren't as impressive as Carlsbad Caverns, but were worth the tour.
The guide was a 3rd generation caver and told many interesting stories. Two people turned around within 5 mins. and 2 others had breathing problems halfway through.
This was the bottom and mandatory picture for almost everyone.
Judy isn't in the picture because she decided not to go underground again. We'd been here a few years ago, and speluncking isn't really her favorite thing.
When we arrived at our campground we actually saw our first sunset in several weeks since Florida was so rainy these past weeks. Luckily, River provided enough sunshine for us.
This little campground is called Singing Hills Rv Park.
Thursday
Up and out again, and on the road. We drove through the rest of Kentucky, admiring the hills full of farms as we did. We were enjoying driving without air conditioning for the first time in a long time. As we entered Indiana, the landscape changed again. It's flat, but still lots of trees around the farms and highways...farms full of corn, hay, and some other crop we don't know. We drove through the whole state, south to north, and are camped just about 1 hour away from Chicago, at a complex called Cedar Lake Ministries RV Campground...on Cedar Lake...
Judy's perusing the map, planning our route after we leave Chicago...it sure is nice to sit outside again! Whoever would believe it's been too hot to do this for weeks?

Our last day with River (and Reliance, Serenity, and Kyle)
Monday July 22nd (Day 329)
Reliance greeting us at his door with his dog, Pepe.
River giving us a greeting, too!
She's really listening to Harris...though we're not sure she's approving of his haircut.
A nice shot of Kyle cradling his daughter.
Three generations of Thomases.
Such a look!
Mom and Dad adoring lovely River.
Curling up on Daddy's chest to sleep.
River practicing Tai Chi
Grandma's finger soothes her for a little while.
Reliance sacked out...
Everyone is taking a nap....except River!
Harris and Reliance grilled Serenity's special request dinner-- chicken kabobs, salad, and chocolate cheesecake.
Grandma got her last minutes with River before we left to return to the RV park.
We don't want to say good-bye, but we're more than confident they will do just fine without us here.

Day 13 with River
Saturday July 20th (Day 327)
Hanging out with the 13 day old sweetie!
She's giving Grandpa the "eye"...not really appreciating his jokes!
But she's willing to listen.
Hmmmm.....can't decide if that one was funny or not.
Guess I'll give him another chance.
Nope! His jokes are too lame for me!
Uncle Re gets to change River's diapers...lucky him!
He can do the change in under 90 seconds (at least the wet ones)! Well done.

Reliance"s 15th birthday
Wednesday, July 17th (Day 324)
Today Reliance turned the big 15. He's been excited all week for today. He chose Blue Crab, NY strip steak, fruit salad, and cake for his "special meal". He also volunteered to cook the crab. So Harris bought 6 live large blue crabs from the fish market which were brought home in a large double bag for the transplanted Baltimore clan. Reliance thought it was cool how they protected themselves with their pincher claws.
A borrowed pot and crumpled soda cans provided the steamer.
Harris almost forgot to take a picture of the finished product. This is the bottom half with Old Bay spice clinging to their backs. Fifteen minutes was perfect.
The cook ready to demolish his share.
The Glee Club preparing to sing Happy Birthday.
And the big moment...blowing out the candles on the ice cream cake.
Afterwards, Reliance made out like a bandit with his presents.

Day 9 with River
Tuesday July 16th (Day 323)
We got a few pictures today with her eyes open!
Serenity actually found a few minutes to read a book, rocking River's bouncy seat with her foot.
Reliance doesn't look too thrilled today with all the attention River's getting.
Grandma time! River's wearing a new dress we bought her for her one week birthday.
Lots of new expressions!
Resting on Grandpa's knee.

Day 5 with River
Friday July 12th (Day 319)
We've been going visiting almost every day (when they'll let us). River has passed another exam today with flying colors. This is what Reliance does when we have River on our laps and he's not tasked with chores.
Kyle still needs to give the dogs the attention which they've been used to.
And now the finale...
Almost each minute there is a different expression crossing her face.
We can see her practicing her many poses to get what she'll want in the future.
Poor parents have no clue what they're in for!

Day 2 with River Thomas
Tuesday July 9th, 2013 (Day 316)
These mushrooms grew overnite in our park...guess we're in the tropics!
Kyle is putting together a new bouncy seat for River.
Grandpa is enjoying holding River while she sleeps.
On the way home tonight we were treated to a very unusual sight. The sky lit up behind a cloud, over and over again. A lightning storm! But it's gone on now for about 30 minutes...with half the sky full of stars, half with clouds...and no rain or thunder that we can hear. It's almost like a fourth of July fireworks display!
