Hangin’ out at Bahia Honda

Snowy White Egret sticks out

We took a walk this morning, before it got too hot. This was a bit of a mistake, since it wasn’t boiling hot yet, and there was still a breeze, we forgot to put on the sunscreen. Hours later, we discovered we were both had a bit of a sunburn. Yes, even Harris!

An accident causes a 5 mile backup past our site

The walk took us all over the Bahia Honda state park campground. It’s really quite spread out. We walked a lot farther than we had anticipated. But since the friendly rangers (not) had not given us any kind of map, we just kept walking, around one more bend, then one more campground area, one more, one more….hence the sunburn.

Probably the only time you won't get cited for fishing off the bridge

When we returned, we sat a watched traffic for a while with some fellow campers. We had a view of the bridge and highway from our campsite. We found out on our walk there had been a very serious accident at 8 that morning a few miles from us. The traffic was backed up past our campground, and down the highway as far as we could see. Some campers next to us left, and came back a few minutes later, figuring there was no value in just getting in a line. It took until almost noon before the traffic began flowing normally again. Luckily, we didn’t have to leave early!

Our site at Long Key State Park (not too shabby)

After lunch, we drove a bit down to the swimming beach, because we had to leave our campsite by 1. We walked into a very shallow area on the gulf side. There were a few rocky areas where you first entered, then there was lots of sand. We just bobbed around for about an hour, enjoying the sun, cool water, and schools of little fish that swam past us.

Shallow water really affects the water line

Then we drove to our next destination, Long Key State Park, a whole 30 miles away. This is a very different looking park. As its name implies, it is long, and spread out lengthwise. There is only one row of campsites. There are 60 sites, all along the Atlantic side of the road. It is breezy here, so no bugs are bugging us tonight. Harris grilled steak and veggies on his little barbeque, and Judy won at cards tonight.

Tomorrow we leave the Keys, and head north.

Sunset through the trees
