Brake job in Casper, WY

Friday  6/14 (Day 290)

We spent the morning in Casper getting new brakes put on Howie. We felt fortunate to find a place that could get the right parts and do the job right away, so we didn't have to spend a day waiting.

So we took off about noon, down Interstate 25 until we reached the intersection of highway 26. We saw signs telling us that there were historical markers and places to visit on this highway. We had intended to take it anyway, and enjoyed making a few stops along the way. One of these was Register Cliff, where immigrants in the wagon trains of the 1840's and beyond carved their names into the rocks.

This  cave was blasted out with dynamite and used for cold storage since the temperature didn't vary much throughout the year.

Some of the names and dates visible on the cliffs.

Howie waiting patiently for us to return from viewing the names.

We ended up outside of Fort Laramie, at a small RV park named the Pony Soldier RV park. It's right next door to a small museum, which we had to visit before it closed at 5. The man in the picture is the curator, or docent, or resident expert. He spent about an hour with us, explaining each display in great detail and with great scientific knowledge. The museum has fossilized sea creatures, fossilized mammal bones, and even some dinosaur bones, as well as more "recent" items: arrowheads, spear points, furs, and items from the 1800's. Our guide explained he was growing his beard for the fur rendezvous re-enactment that takes place this weekend at the fort, so we plan to check that out tomorrow.

This picture was taken inside a booth that uses a black light to show the various minerals inside different rocks.

This gentleman is camped next to us and will be at the re-enactment tomorrow. He proudly showed Harris his pistol that he built and will shoot at a competition. He also mentioned that Alaskan Pale Ale is his favorite beer.

Total miles driven today = 120
