Tues. 6/4- Sun. 6/9 (Days 281-286)
On Tuesday morning we meandered our way down highway 191 from Belgrade
toward Yellowstone. Of course, summertime means construction on the highways!
We camped Tuesday night at a forest service campground outside West Yellowstone called Baker's Hole. Wednesday we set out for Bridge Bay campground inside Yellowstone. It's early June, and the weather is improving, but there is still snow on the sides of the road. Here we are, set up in Loop A, our least favorite spot. All the upper loops were closed because of bear activity, so we took what we could get. We wanted a spot that would be big enough for 2 rigs. We were meeting Ewan's dad, Alan, and his uncle, Duncan, who are traveling from England and Germany through Yellowstone in a rented RV. Notice we're still bundled up, even with blue skies and sunshine!
Late in the afternoon Alan and Duncan showed up and Harris cooked a great steak dinner for our first meal together.
We liked watching this critter climbing on a tent trailer next to us.
Duncan is a professional photographer, and he's fulfilling a childhood dream to come to Yellowstone. He gets up at 5 to catch the right light, and has an extremely quick eye for wildlife. We've had a great time tagging along with him, getting tips for pictures and seeing things through his eyes.
The obligatory shot!
On a walk past Old Faithful to Observation point.
Alan the intrepid climber!
Almost to the top.
On the way back down, we spotted this fellow just browsing away in the trees.
On Friday we moved to Madison campground. Candy missed the sound of Judy's squeaky shoes so much that she and Rick came to join us for the weekend. That evening, several buffalo decided to wander through our campground. Harris took this picture because the guy seemed oblivious as he cooked his dinner. (He really wasn't.)
Alan talked with his neighbor and got a "dog fix". Apparently this is a breed he used to own.
We have a lot more Yellowstone pics to share...coming in part 2. On Sunday, as we were getting ready to move on to a new campground, Harris decided to see what could be draining our battery. In the process, he shorted out our entire electrical system, turning Howie into a moving tent. He had to fiddle with the engine to make sure we could even drive it. Fortunately, that was successful. Also, fortunately! we weren't that far from Candy and Rick's house in Belgrade. So instead of going further into the park, we drove back to Belgrade to spend the night, plugging Howie into an outlet and seeing what needed to be done next.
Harris called customer support on Monday morning and got some good advice as to how to proceed, replacing 2 fuses, and we think we're back in business! If all goes well, we're heading back to Yellowstone tomorrow to meet back up with Alan and Duncan for a few more days. The weather has been fantastic the last few days, warm and sunny and beautiful blue skies. We're looking forward to some more good times.
