Leaving Yellowstone

Tues 6/11 - Thurs. 6/13 (Days 287-289)

We left Belgrade Tuesday morning, and decided to enter the park on the north side this time. We love the way this arch frames the scene.

We met up with Alan and Duncan again, but this time at Canyon campground. We went off Wednesday afternoon with them, taking shots around the park and looking for all kinds of animals, big and small. Harris liked the sky in this shot.

On our way back to the campground, we finally saw a black bear. Duncan and Alan had seen 3 in the very early morning, and we ended up seeing 2 more before the day was done.

Thursday morning found us saying goodbye again, as we headed off through Grand Teton National Park on our way to Florida. When we left Yellowstone it was 46 degrees. The day gradually warmed up to 90!

We turned east out of the park, down highway 26. We had beautiful weather and beautiful scenery like this for the first couple of hours.

We stopped to take a picture of these bluffs....then turned the corner and at a pull off we saw a lot of cars..and people with cameras...

and right there, by the side of the highway was a mother grizzly and her 2 cubs. We stayed for about 30 minutes, just enjoying the sight, until a ranger came by and made everyone get back in their cars. Apparently this group had been hanging around the campsites at Brooks Lake, and the ranger said they would most likely be relocated soon. How lucky were we to be there just at the right time!

Later on, we saw this fellow on top of a telephone pole.

As we were coming over a rise, Judy suddenly said, "slow down!"...at first we thought, "buffalo crossing"...but no, we weren't in Yellowstone anymore. These were cows being herded by cowboys on four-wheelers. They went back and forth across the highway all the way up the hill, taking about 30 minutes to finally clear the road.

This is the last "pretty" picture. The landscape soon turned to flat, dry, sage brush scenes, although we did see several prong horn antelope along the way.

We ended up in Casper, and are staying the night at Fort Casper Campground. We've decided the front rotors and brakes need to be replaced, and we're still chasing down a few electrical problems, so we might be here for a couple of days longer than we had planned.

Total miles driven today =360
