Baltimore, Maryland

Tues/Wed, May 3=4, 2011 (days 228/9)

Tuesday was a driving day, from Roanoke Rapids in North Carolina to Baltimore, Maryland. Interstate 95 was a good drive most of the way, just bogging down some as we went around Washington, DC on 295. There are lots of green trees along the highways, which makes for a pretty spring drive. On Tuesday the temperature reached a high of 85 degrees…which was going to change rapidly!

We found a state park just outside Baltimore, called Patapsco State Park. It has about 80 some sites nestled among trees, but only about 10 of them are occupied, so it’s a very quiet camp. (Except you can still hear some traffic noise from the interstate, in the distance, but it’s not bad.) We checked into our site, then drove on to find Kyle’s apartment in the city. It’s only a few miles away, but takes at least 30 minutes to get there without traffic. We chose to go through the city rather than the interstate route, and got quite a tour of different neighborhoods, from very poor to very rich.

Kyle cooking Dwight's Alaskan Halibut

It is so great to see Kyle! And Reliance! Serenity is currently in Florida going to school, so we’ll miss her on this visit. Kyle has been a very gracious host, cooking a wonderful dinner for our first night (buffalo steaks, red potatoes and asparagus), and then a great breakfast the next morning (biscuits, eggs, sausages…yum).

We hung around the apartment for the afternoon and evening, visiting, playing cards, taking the dog, Pablo, for a walk. It started to rain…and continued to rain, and rain, and rain. We found a new leak in Howie the next morning by a window that we’ll have to fix.

Reliance who doesn't like Halibut loved it

Wednesday Kyle took a day off work and visited with us for the day. We ran errands with him after the great breakfast, got a few things for dinner, and waited for Reliance to come home from school. It was still a bit cool and rainy, so we didn’t go anywhere touristy. Harris and Kyle cooked some halibut that Dwight had given us. They cooked it in a beer batter…very tasty. Even Reliance liked it! We watched a movie with them after dinner (and more walks with the dog), called “How to Train a Dragon”…very good movie. Coming back to the campground was a little easier the second night. We didn’t miss the first exit to a different highway for one thing! (and have to go the opposite direction until an exit could allow us to turn around). The weather has improved to sunny and mild. The rain is gone, but it was cold last night. We put on our down blanket again, and (big sighs from Harris here) long pants for the first time since Seattle.

Thursday morning we took a walk around the campground before breakfast. When you first enter the campground, you go down a hill, through a tunnel under the highway, then back up a hill to the office. Then down another hill to the actual sites. We joked on the walk that we were climbing bigger hills than we did in the whole state of Florida! We’re off again to spend the day with Kyle and Reliance!
