Baltimore to Boston

Thursday, May 5 and Friday May 6, 2011 (days 230, 231)

We had a relaxing morning at our camp, eating breakfast and taking a walk through the park, because Kyle was working at a clinic. We caught up with him at his place about 1, and visited until Reliance came home from school. Then we piled in Kyle’s car and drove to the harbor to take a tour of a ship. There are actually 4 ships you can tour at this museum, but we only had time for one. We chose the USS Constellation, the last all-sail ship built by the navy. We got to explore all 4 decks of it, reading signs and listening to our audio tapes, telling us all about life aboard this ship. Harris took several pictures along the way. Because we were there at closing time, Reliance got to help “retire the colors”, meaning take down and fold the American flag. (There are a couple of employees in historic navy uniforms who are there to answer questions and do things like this.) It was a sunny, breezy day and quite an enjoyable outing.

On the drive home, Kyle detoured around to Camden Yards, the home stadium of the Baltimore Oriels. Harris took more pictures and bemoaned the fact that we always seem to visit these places when the team is out of town. Maybe next time we’ll be able to take in a game at this historic park!

A little history...

We picked up a quick dinner of fried chicken and watched the movie “The King’s Speech” with Kyle and Reliance, since they hadn’t seen it. Even though we have seen it before, we still enjoyed seeing it again.

Up to 8 men used during heavy seas

On Friday morning we had said goodbye to Reliance before he headed off to school and Kyle cooked us an excellent breakfast before we hit the road again. It was great to see where he’s been living and working, but it was hard to say goodbye. At least we’ll get to see each other again in a few months!

The 2nd deck

We decided that since Keith was working tonight, we wouldn’t try to get all the way to his place in one day, although we could have. We took a little longer route to avoid some big toll charges in New York state. We drove north from Baltimore, Maryland, through Pennsylvania, across just a bit of New York state, through Connecticut and into Massachusetts. Wow! Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? (interstate 83 to 81 to 84, almost to 90).

The 3rd deck--marines slept between officers and enlisted men

This all adds up to about 500 miles, and we’re about an hour away from Boston and Keith’s apartment. We’re camped in Wells State Park outside of Sturbridge, Massachusetts. It seems like a very pretty park, spread out, but it’s dark now so we’ll have to explore it a bit in the morning.

Much nicer for officers

Great looking ship

Camden Yards--too bad they were out of town

Total miles driven today= 455
